NatureFresh, other growers, receive kudos for greenhouse vegetables

Leamington, Ontario-based NatureFresh Farms captured top honors in five categories, including Best Overall Tomato, at the annual Greenhouse Vegetable Awards.

NatureFresh Farms took top honors at the June 17 competition in the following categories:

Best Cocktail Tomato; Tomz Sweet Red Cocktail Tomato;Best Beefsteak Tomato; OntarioRed Red Beefsteak Tomato; and

“Receiving these awards is more than just about showcasing the best that we grow; it is about our commitment to pushing the category in the right direction in delivering consistent flavor across the category,” Peter Quiring, NatureFresh owner and president, said in a news release. “The Tomz Red Cherry Tomato is a game-changer; super sweet, bite-sized, crunchy, with the perfect balance of acidity, the real winners are the consumers who can enjoy this premium snacking tomato year-round, it’s hands down our grower’s choice.”

It was the second straight year that NatureFresh Farms won the Best Cocktail Tomato Award, as well as the Best Yellow Bell Pepper Award.

NatureFresh’s Tomz Snacking Tomatoes were a finalist for the United Fresh Produce Association’s Innovation Awards in the Best New Vegetable category, at the association’s expo June 14-15 Chicago.

“We trial more than 300-plus different varieties each year to ensure we are always delivering the most flavorful varieties available worldwide,” Benny Teichroeb, NatureFresh’s trial program coordinator, said in the release.

NatureFresh Farms conducts its product research/development in its 2.5-acre Trial Greenhouse & Discovery Center in Leamington, according to the release.

Kingsville, Ontario-based Mastronardi Produce Ltd./Sunset brand won seven awards and secured the honor of the most award-winning contestant over the last 10 years. Along with Most Awarded, Sunset won top honors in six other categories, including:

Leamington-based Pure Hothouse Foods and its Pure Flavor brand was recognized for six products:

For the fourth year in a row, Pure Flavor took home honors for its snacking cucumbers, which also are featured in their new Mini Munchies Vegetable Snacks for kids.

Leamington-based Orangeline Farms won first prize for:Best Hothouse Hot Pepper, Spicy Chef Sampler, which also won a People’s Choice Award.

All funds raised from the Greenhouse Competitions go to R.E.A.CH. International, a charity that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to build schools and clinics, drill water wells and sponsor and care for impoverished children in Uganda.
